Brynmelin Cup Final. Cwm Press 2 Saints 1 (AET)

Saints went into this game completely unfazed and went at their more experienced opponents with purpose and vigour. Once the game settled down however, the Cwm side's superior physical strength began to make a difference. Saints continued to take the game to them however and Sam Carlsen gave the Saints the lead after fifteen minutes with a superb left foot drive from all of thirty yards. This was a shot in the arm for the young Saints and they began playing some delightful football. With the defence superbly marshalled by Julian "Minna" Johnston and partner Christian Evans, the Saints were proving a tough nut to crack and so the score remained 1-0 to Saints at the break. After the re-start, Saints were a little slow to get back to grips with matters and found themselves once more under the cosh. Some terrific defending from Kevin Lewis, Dan Chafey, Johnston & Evans kept Saints in the game. They regained their composure somewhat and began to make inroads behind the Cwm defence, with the ever willing Danny Evans creating havoc. Saints then had a great chance to double their lead after great work from Evans, put strike partner Nathan Hodgson in a great position with only the keeper to beat. Hodgson's first touch unfortunately got away from him and the keeper made a neat save. Cwm immediately went up the other end and equalised, but not without a superb treble save from young Saints keeper Colin Farrell. Farrell tipped the initial shot on to the crossbar, then scrambled to keep the rebound out. His attempted clearance fell to the feet of an opponent, who smashed a point blank effort which Farrell was again somehow equal to. Unfortunately Cwm were first to react and the loose ball was driven into the Saints net. Into extra time and the two teams were still locked in battle. Early in the second period, the Cwm striker, suspiciously offside was allowed to continue to tuck his shot neatly away to clinch the cup as penalties loomed. This was a terrific cup tie, fought out between two honest, sporting and hardworking teams. If this is an advert for the Swansea Senior League, then it is a very good one indeed.

Capping a fine season.

Team Line up

Young Jamie Bevan of our under 16 squad was chosen to represent Wales by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales in Scotland. The squad played at Dens Park, home of Dundee FC and they beat the Scots 5-0 to win the Boys and Girls Clubs Challenge Cup for the first time at under 16. Jamie played a significant part in his team's victory with two assists for goals. Jamie has enjoyed a fine season with the Saints, helping them to win the League Cup and this recognition by Wales is well deserved and has made all of us at the club extremely proud. Well done Jamie.

Honorary Saint

Erik Thonquist and the Under 16 squad

Our Under 16 squad were proud and delighted to welcome Erik Thornquist from seattle USA to a training session. Erik plays for Emerald City in Seattle and was in the UK for a holiday when he dropped in on the Saints and enjoyed a workout, helping himself to a hat trick of goals on the way. Although a year or two younger than our lads, young Erik showed some very classy touches. The Saints wish him well in his soccer carreer Stateside and we hope to chart his progress this side of the pond too.
